phrasal verb noun /ˈfreɪzəl ˌvɜːrb/

A group of words made up of a verb and one or more particles (like an adverb or preposition) that together have a meaning different from the individual words.

Example: "In English, 'give up' is a common phrasal verb that means to stop trying."

onto/on to preposition (as "on to") /ˈɒn.tuː/

used when "on" is part of a phrasal verb and "to" shows direction or movement.

Example: He held on to the railing as he walked down the stairs.

Elvin looks up a new word before class. Aysel turns up late and tries to catch up. The teacher asks them to fill in the form and hand it in. During the break, Elvin points out a mistake and Aysel fixes it. After class, they put off the café plan and go home. Aysel gives up after one try, but then continues. Elvin writes the phrasal verbs down. They work out the meaning from context. Elvin takes off the jacket and sits down. They go over the examples again.
