Üçüncü şərt (keçmişə qarşı qeyri-real)
If + had + V3would have + V3

The third conditional imagines a past situation that did not happen and its imaginary past result. It is always “unreal” about the past.

AZ
Üçüncü şərt keçmişdə olmayan vəziyyəti və onun təsəvvürdəki nəticəsini təsvir edir — həmişə keçmişə qarşı «qeyri-real».

Structure

If + past perfect (had + V3), would have + V3 (main clause).

AZ
Quruluş: If + Past Perfect, əsas cümlədə would have + V3.
  • If I had studied harder, I would have passed. — oxumadım, keçmədim
  • If they had left earlier, they wouldn’t have missed the train.

Variations

  • Modal in the result: might have, could have for possibility/ability in the past.
  • Both parts can be negative: If I hadn’t seen it, I wouldn’t have believed it.
AZ
Nəticə hissəsində might have / could have keçmişdə ehtimal və ya bacarıq verir. Şərt hissəsində keçmiş zaman ümumiyyətlə will olmur — qeyri-real şərt had + V3-dür.

Do not mix third conditional with present/future “will” in the if-clause — the unreal condition is always past perfect.

AZ
Şərt hissəsinə indiki/gələcək «will» əlavə etməyin — qeyri-real şərt həmişə past perfect-dir.

Reading: 3rd conditional

If I had studied harder last year, I would have passed the exam with a better grade. If my friend had told me about the meeting, I would have attended it. I would have joined the sports club if I had known it was free. If the weather had been better yesterday, we could have gone hiking. I regret that I did not wake up early, because I missed the bus. Thinking about the third conditional helps me understand how past events could have been different.

Mən niyə avtobusu qaçırdım?

Hava daha yaxşı olsaydı nə edə bilərdik?
