Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Some are formed from adjectives; others are irregular or fixed.

AZ
Zərflər feilin, sifətin və ya başqa zərfin necə, nə dərəcədə, nə vaxt olduğunu bildirir. Bəzilərini sifətdən düzəldirik; bəziləri isə özü əvvəldən sabit cütlük və ya xüsusi formadır.

Irregular: different word from the adjective

The adjective and adverb are not the same word — learn pairs.

AZ
Sifət və zərf eyni söz olmur — cütləri əzbərləyin.
  • goodwell (She sings well.) — «yaxşı oxuyur»
  • fastfast (same form) — eyni yazılış
  • hardhard (work hard) vs hardly (= almost not) hardly = demək olar ki, heç

Regular: add -ly

Many adverbs of manner use adjective + -ly: quick → quickly, careful → carefully.

AZ
Çox vaxt sifətə -ly əlavə olunur: quick → quickly (tez), careful → carefully (ehtiyatla).
  • Spelling: happy → happily (y → i), terrible → terribly.
  • After linking verbs describing how someone does an action, use the adverb: She spoke clearly.
AZ
Hərəkətin necə icra olunduğunu deyəndə zərf işlədin: clearly (açıq şəkildə).

When we do not add -ly

  • With certain verbs — fixed adverbial forms: go home, sleep well, sit still, arrive early/late (not *homely* in this sense).
  • Flat adverbs — same as adjective in informal English: drive slow / slowly, real / really (formal writing prefers slowly, really).
  • Some words are adverbs as they are — not formed from -ly: often, seldom, never, here, there, today, still, even.
AZ
Bəzi birləşmələr sabitdir (go home); bəzən sifət forması danışıqda zərf kimi qalır; often, never, here kimi sözlər isə ümumiyyətlə -ly almır.

After feel / smell / look + adjective (It smells good) · action verb + adverb (She cooks well).

AZ
Məsləhət: feel, smell, look və s. sonra tez-tez sifət gəlir (It smells good); amma konkret hərəkət feilində well kimi zərf lazımdır (She cooks well).
